La Virgen del Arcoiris

Digital illustration.

Growing up as a Catholic in the small Mexican-American farming town of Salinas, CA, the iconic image of La Virgen de Guadalupe has always resonated with me.

During the prolonged COVID-related lockdowns of 2020, I was bound to my tiny apartment in the Highland Park neighborhood of LA. In my search for comfort I turned to La Virgen.

Just as the original image depicted her in a form that Mexicans found easily accessible, I too wanted to illustrate her as something I as a queer, rainbow-obsessed 90’s kid could relate to. Thus, La Virgen del Arcoiris was born.

Below are examples of merchandise available featuring this illustration. A portion of sales from my votive candles go to the SNAP Network, a support group for survivors of religious sexual abuse.
